i put another hard drive in from another computer i am trying to get the information off but when enever i go into documents and settings and then the user it just says access denied, there was windows xp installed on it, is there any way i can de restrict the file access so i can get into it ?

Try accessing it from DOS. (Start/Run/ and then type "cmd"). Navigate to the wanted dirctory with "cd /xxxx". Use "dir" command to list files.

If you cannot gain access, the documents may be protected.

Are you using NTFS? was the old machine using NTFS?

Right click on the file and choose properties. Select the security tab at the top of the screen then click the "Advanced" button, now select the Owner tab at the top, select your username in the list and select "take ownership".

Apply and OK and now you should have access to the file.

there is no securty bar on mine!!
any ideas?

0 Bytes? I'd say that was corrupt, but download a Linux live boot CD (Ubuntu maybe?) and try accessing it through that. Never done it myself, but it sounds easy enough, and you don't have to install the OS.

I got my money on file corruption though...
I can't say I'd know tbh, just a guess (don't flame me!)

It's reading as zero bytes because you don't have permissions to the file.

If you're on XP Pro, then got to tools --> folder options and turn off simple file sharing - then you'll have a security tab.

If you're on XP Home, you won't have this option.
