my brother's computer some reason can't access internet any longer. it worked fine until all of a sudden only msn messanger would work then nothing, then we changed router and everything worked then only msn after a day then little while later again nothing.

i have tried this laptop through same connection and it's fine so must be his pc.

just did a virus check using avast and after finding and removing many viruses it still didn't work.

really stumped now what to do.

anything i can do to fix this?

Onboard network? More than one port to try? Or do you have a spare network card to try or something.

It could literally with a dodgey port...But I'm not sure really.

Does it literally not connect then? Presumably all the network settings are correct, and the router is allowing him to access the net.

Check for viruses/malware with some other software too. AVG, Spybot etc. Does sound like an odd problem though if it aint a port issue

Try one of the live disc Linuxs on the PC this should give you an idea if the fault is hardware of software.

If it's software make sure the browser isn't configured to use a proxy server.

Flush your DNS cache but doing Start > Run and then typing ipconfig /flushdns and enter.

Might also be worth trying a different browser.

might be easier to jsut reinastll the machine... however

1) do ipcomfig /all your DHCP server and default gateway will be the same number
2) go to a dos prompt and type "PING type-the-default-gateway-ip" obviously substituting type-the-default-gateway-ip with the ip address (reply from = it worked)
3) at the same dos box type "ping www.intel.com" (reply from = it worked)
4) at a dos prompt type "telnet www.intel.com 80" a black screen should pop up mash the kb a bit and press return a few times (repeat a few times) - if it says connect failed its failed if it lets you type some stuff then after a bit of mashing and a few returns some html its worked

if it works up to 3 then its probably a firewall blocking either port 80 out or IE
if 4 works is some silly settings in ie (however it could be the firewall blocking IE's internet access)
if 2 fails its your connection to the router (or it might be firewall)

hmm that sounds really complicated but its only 60seconds of work...

just info for the OP: You need to type "ipconfig", not "ipcomfig".

I know it's obvious to most of us but if the OP isn't computer-savvy, it might not be obvious for them :)
