Hi guys, bit of a question for the technically minded folk out there.

At work we have a few outreach workers who use an adsl broadband connection and a cisco VPN client to connect to our domain. One of them, when using the VPN, has absolutely no issue at all. However, when they aren't using the VPN the internet doesn't work. Can anybody shed any light on this? we've tried different routers and even different ISP's to no avail.

I believe this should solve it ( not 100% sure )

go to properties on the VPN > Networking > TCP/IP > properties advanced > Untick "Use default gateway on remote network"

You don't need to go through all that (if the connection's even in your list of networks) if you're using the Cisco VPN Client - it's in one of the menus (don't have the client on this machine so can't say which).
Ideally, there's routing options that should be set to only tunnel packets for a limited IP range (but that's an admin thing).

do you use a proxy server in your office?

If so, the laptop will be attempting to use that to access the net - which it can't as the user isn't conencted to the VPN.

Internet Options, connections, LAN Settings, uncheck all the boxes.

See it all the time in my workplace...

it's a home user and a pretty standard router. other home users can connect without issue so i know it's not something which the company has intentionally set up to limit access.

Do you really think it's something that the VPN has in place to prevent access when it's NOT on? i mean it's not even running and she can't get web access.

do you use proxy scripts?

if so, you'll have to disable them if you want to browse just through the router.

its the same on our laptops at work.
