Cant activate i Phone

I have just got a new 3g i Phone, but it wont launch Tunes. I assumed that by connecting the phone to the USB, i Tunes would launch and take you to an activation page? All I seem to be getting is "found new hardware wizard". At one point I said no and found the i Phone in the cameras and Scanners part of control panel, Windows then asked which programme to use!!!!

Not what I expected. I removed the i Phone from Camera and Scanners in control panel. I am waiting for my old non 3g number to be ported to 3g, but I have read that I can still use my old O2 SIM whilst waiting for the number port?

I would be grateful for any advice.

Download and (re)install the latest iTunes which should install the proper help service it needs to detect the iPhone.

However I had an issue that even with the latest iTunes Windows would not see the phone, never resolved it, gave up, used OS X.

I am currently using i Tunes 8.1.0.55. Not sure if thats the latest, but I will pop over to Apple and check.

You need to make sure the apple mobile/remote (or something like that :/) service installs and runs.

iTunes is shocking on PCs really, which is a shame

Just about to purchase a new i Mac 2.93ghz, I think that may be the answer!! Been looking a long time since my son got on at Christmas!
