Can't boot into windows - VISTA 64-bit (9800 GX2)

Hey guys,
My pc has become offcially weird. I am using a leadtek 9800 GX2, problem is basically, I can't boot into windows using ANY drivers on this GPU.

However, if I uninstall all drivers and load it normally through windows using it as a general VGA it will load and is useable as I am writing on it now. Problem occurs when I try to update the drivers for the card. I have installed the latest, also tried 197xx and the ones that came with the GPU when I first bought it.

On booting up, it makes it past the POST screen, then gets to the initial loading page of vista with the progress bar on the bottom of the screen, then that goes of and system hangs at a black screen. Today at work, I managed to reinstall windows on a new HDD, and rebuilt my original one and all loaded fine once more - UNTIL updating the graphics drivers. An extra note, I did think to try the card in my alternative PCI-E slot but it wont fit properly because of the connectors on the bottom of the mobo.

Does anyone have any clues at all?

Using Vista home premium 64-bit
Abit IX38 Quad GT mobo
Intel Q6600 stock speed
Geil 4GB ram
Barracuda 500GB hdd

Power requirements, it could be once the drivers are installed it's using more power...

Another though, the card is damaged... try it a different system?

I do not think it is the power, as this gfx card work fine as of 2 weeks ago. Although last week, it did a system crash during BFBC2. And I could only turn off and on again. Upon attempting that it failed to read boot manager or could not validate winload.exe

I reinstalled Vista and it loaded ok until updating the graphics, so not sure if it is power. I am not sure how to test the card either as I can't get a similar system that will take my gfx card. I do not live far from OCUK base, should I pay them a visit?

PSU's can go bad...

Hmm. You could give OCUK a call tomorrow and ask, they might be able to help... don't want to say either way though as I don't work for 'em!

Ah right, sorry for my inexperience and if my approach was ill mannerd. Thank you for you help by the way! I didn't think it was the PSU as it is stable and doesnt crash right now - would this still be possible. The thing I dislike about tehcnology problems they can be so many things! I will phone them tomorrow

It can be... possibly to do with the standard VGA drivers not switching on the complex functions of the GPU and therefore not drawing power.

It basically could be drawing too much power for the rails... you could go in to BIOS and check your voltages and report back, though BIOS results are a bit "iffy".

I'm not saying it is the PSU BTW, but I've heard of PSU's doing very strange things to PC's, random BSODS, crashes, Reboots, not powering on all the time, and more besides.

Hmmm... It's a real pity you don't have a spare PSU / PC you could try things on... it makes fault finding a real pain in the butt. I've been in that situation before where no one else I knew had a DDR2 and PCIE back when they were new... it sucked.

Yeah it does suck and right hmm I will have to investigate the PSU readings. I don't know what it is, it seems to be that the card operates but as you said does not want to use any drivers for the card and use only the VGA drivers. Computers!!

Thank you again I think I shall take it to OC at the weekend

Hello again Dark Angel. I managed to test the GPU in another system thanks to a person at work and he had the same symptons on his system so it is deffinately the graphics card, I think thecard is also now out of warranty as onthe serial number, there wasa small date on the label ofJuly 2008 -just my luck!

So if I may ask do you think would be a good replacement for a 9800 with similar or slightly better performance. At the moment I think I will either get the XFX ATI 5750 for £100 and buy windows7 or maybe say a limit of £130-140 for a new graphics card.

Or maybe I could stretch to 2 slightly cheaper cards and run them in SLI or Xfire and get windows 7 aswell?

Hope it is not too much to askfor your opinion, just so I can get a2nd opinion

At the moment I have:
Abit IX38 Quad GT mobo
Intel Q6600 CPU
Geil 4GB 1066
Corsair 650W
and an ASUS DS sound card

Ok thank you again, I do not get paid till next thursday. So i have until then to decide. What sort of minimum power is needed to run 2 cards in SLI/Xfire say for example 2 x ATI 5750? or would it better for one card? Just to narrow down the list of choice
