Cant boot windows

I have striped a friends computer and rebuilt it to organize all cables etc. Spec is:
Q6600
XFX 680i LT mobo
Couple of sticks of sli-ready 800mhz ram
OCZ 700w PSU

They had formatted a 320gb hdd and left it in the comp for me to install a fresh copy of windows on. However when i boot the windows install from either a flash drive or DVD it loads the files then goes no further.

Anything i could have missed? Any suggestions?

When you say it goes no further.
When it boots from the dvd you see the files booting at the bottom of the screen?
What screen does it get stuck on?

yes i see the files loading across the bottom.

With the CD it stops before the logo just a black screen

With the USB stick it stops on the bit after, where the logo usually shows but before the logo. Just saying "windows starting"
