Asus m4a78lt-m le mobo, need to replace the AMD CPU stock fan as it was making an annoying buzzing sound. Got a 3-pin replacement fan (startech) but the fan is running at full speed (3800rpm) and im unable to change the speed via the fan setting in the bios. I have tried SpeedFan and whilst it read the CPU fan and the speed its running at im unable to get SpeedFab to change the fan speed either, i was under the impression all 3 pin fans were able to have the speed changed via the voltage going to the fan?

I'm guessing the bios will only control a 4 pin PWM fan automatically. Try disabling Q-fan in bios and using Speedfan.

In Speedfan:
Configure -> Advanced
Pick you Chip for the motherboard (mine is IT8720F on ISA)
Change all PWM mode settings to "Software controlled" and tick the remember it checkbox

You can now control a non-pwm fan via voltage, hopefully.

The PWN in the advanced list were already set to 'Software controlled', im still unable to lower the fan speed. Unless im adjusting the fan speed in the wrong table, im just doing it from the main window in SpeedFan?

No. Asus removed 3 pin fan control from all their boards a while ago. They har introduced it back under the guise of Fan Xpert 2 or + but those boards that dont have the hardware for it are stuck with 100% fan speed unless Speedfan can do something about it.

Check my signature's last link for a way to plug a 3 pin fan into a 4 pin fan header with full 20-100% speed control.

So there is no way for me to slow this fan down via software then?

If you motherboard doesn't have the electronics hardware then you have no chance.

In my Gigabyte BIOS it has 3 options, PWM, Voltage and Auto so at least there was some hope. If you have none of this then you can't adjust it without putting something electronic between the fan and the power going into it.
