can't click on exe after spyware removel

got a mates pc here and had rouge software on, i hooked upto my pc and zapped the spyware off, (done this on loads of pc's) however i can't do anything on the pc as every time i click on an exe it asks what program do i want to open with.

im guessing i will need to use some sort of portable app to resolve?
 
Ooh, I had this on a customer's pc after running mbam on it, can't remember how I fixed it, but I believe it was a regedit jobbie. Did some googling to find it. Off to work so can't dig about for it, but have a google and see what you find
 
I had this problem once too after removing some spyware, I think I did system restore or created a new user account and then I transferred user files over. Was the quickest and easiest way.
 
There are several reg fixes online to sort this. Sometimes it will disable changing the wall paper and task manager as well.
 
it all seems to be running ok now. As i said its a old machine, and im not up for rebuilding, if it was a close mate then yeah, but its more someone i know, if he wants a rebuild then he will need to pay

to get round that

run "command.exe" (might jsut need command or command.com) - not CMD, then from a command line type 'regedit.exe' it will then open regedit - assuming when you tried to run regedit normally it asked what program you wanted it to open with
