I have a Netgear DG834G at home and use a WG111v2 wireless dongle to connect my laptop to the router.

My mate has exactly the same set up at his house.

Last night, we tried to hook my laptop using my WG111 up to his wireless network. My laptop detects his network and even though I have created a "New Profile" in the WG111 setup and entered his WEP passphrase, it wont connect. The bar at the bottom of the WG111 screen remains red and it just says "Scanning".

We tried entering the first WEP key manually, but that resulted in the same thing.

Do we have to change something in the settings on his router which is upstairs connected to his desktop PC, to allow my WG111 and laptop to have permissions etc?.

Not sure, was going to check tonight. I'm at work just now so cant take a look till I finish this evening.

Would that be set to "on" if the router was setup purely on default settings?.

Reason I ask is that I set up the network for him and I cant remember turning MAC addy filtering on.

One thing to check is the SSID, did you leave it on the default as well ?

If so you need to make sure you remove it from your default connections.

If you find that a problem, log onto the router and change the SSID to something dif, Like Home_XXXX_Wireless.

I hate all the wireless card maker interface and turn them off and let windows control my wireless. doign what I said above is a lot easyer in windows config.

Also get him of wep, and onto WPA2 ( wpa at the very least). just google to see how easy it is to hack.

Did you try entering the hex string, as opposed to the passphrase (I presume you mean the string that the router uses to generate the key)

Words. The. Mouth. Taken. My. From. Rearrange to form a well known saying.
