Hello.

To keep a long story short I brought my old laptop to my friends (Dell inspiron 1300, running XP). But he did not have a wireless router, so instead I tried using a bog standard ethernet connection.

Though the ethernet port lights recognise the connection (as did the router). I could not get on the internet.

In "Show all connections" all remained was the existing wireless connection (from when I use it normally), but no Local Connection.

I here you may need a cd from the internet provider to set this up. Which they usually recommend. Though since my friend no longer has it (and a waste of time), I just wanted to know if my laptop needs ethernet drivers of some sort? Or can you download a generic programme which allows you to connect to any ethernet connection and surf the web?

Cheers :)

If there is no Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window it sound slike the driver hasn't been installed.

Justo to be sure, go to Device Manager, Start>Right Click My Computer>Properties>Devices Tab>Device Manager

There should be a listing of a Network Adaptor with an exclamation mark beside it.

Best search for the driver on Dell's site for the driver and take it over to the laptop and install. :)

Try the above method. The CD that the ISP sends out will be of no use to you. Ethernet is usually just plug and play. Although all the status lights indicate that the ethernet is working you should still double check in the device manager, also try disabling and then re-enabling it in device manager if the above post doesn't work for you.
