Bit of an odd one.

I can connect to my home router (Vigor 2700VG) wirelessly from my laptop but I can't connect to it via the cable. Trying the Win7 network repair it just says cannot renew IP address.

Tried 2 further known working cables.
Reset router to factory defaults.
Tried putting in IP addresses manually.

The desktop is a new build (network port on the motherboard stopped working) and that won't connect - I thought the network port on the old board was not working but now I'm having issues with the router I'm not so sure. The network port lights on the board didn't work and Win7 said no network adaptor.

I'm completely stuck here. I've replaced the board thinking it was that and I'm inclined to replace the router too but it sounds like I'm replacing stuff because I can't make it work rather than the parts actually being broken.

Yes, same outcome.

I'm wondering if it's possible for a power surge to damage the ports on both the router and the old motherboard of the desktop?

There was a powercut while we were away. Not sure if that could cause a spike of somekind?

Just tried a firmware update to the router and will have another bash now.

As you say, the same event could have taken out the network ports on both devices.

You could confirm that the ports of the new motherboard and the laptop are working by connecting them directly together and assigning them both static ip addesses. If at least one of them has Gigabit then you wouldn’t need a crossover cable.
