Cant Connect to the Internet

Hello all,

Just had a text from a relative that says his son's PC can't connect to the internet.

He has it connected by Ethernet to the NTL cable modem and is bringing the base tower to my house so I can take a look.

What shall I be checking initially to eliminate any common problems?

Has it been working Ok then just packed in? should have asked him what lights are lit/flashing on the modem

I think he connected a laptop to the internet and then when he reconnected it to the internet it stopped working.
