Can't decide between 4850 and 4870...

My current setup in sig, I game at 1680 x 1050 and so far the 8800gt has been managing nicely with no/low AA.

I'm leaning towards the 4850 atm because I want to keep a single slot cooler card after having the 8800gt. I'm not against a sual slot cooler as I've had the 320mb GTS as well as the 1950xt. Also it is about £60 cheaper.

I've been reading reviews etc but if any 4850/4870 owners who game at this resolution could chip in with their experiences that would be appreciated.
 
I have just gone from a EVGA 8800gts 640Mb to an ATI Sapphire HD4870 and i am very pleased with it.:D

3d mark up by 2000 points to 16925 :eek:

crysis and assasins creed seem to me to look better and play smoother:cool:

i have overclocked using the ati control panel but cant wait until riva tuner supports this card there seems to be a lot of headroom for a very good overclock.

Well, I game at 1680x1050 aswell and went from a 512MB 8800GTS to a 4870. This card doesn't even break a sweat whilst maxing out the games with AA goodness.
 
4850 is a big boost from your old card up to 20-25% faster.

4870 is faster still just do a search on 4850 or 4870 as me and many others have given examples on this recently.
 
My suggestion would be to stay with you GT for a while, it really should be able to run most things you throw at it. Then see what the Nvidia die shrink will bring, it should bring a replacement for the GT/GTS at some point for the mid-end segment, that could be very good. No matter what AMD will have to drop prices at that point too, and who knows what they have up their sleeves?
 
I like to slap on at least 4XAA, GT would get slow down in some games, grid with 4XAA at 1680x1050 would go down to 30fps in some situations, the 4870 i have never seen go below 60fps, 4870 feels like such a power house, it just eats AA for fun, IQ IMO is better on the desktop and in game, HD playback is simply the best.

Buy a HD4850 and sell your 8800GT! :)

HD4850 is *easily* the best bang for buck atm and the price of your 8800GT is falling everyday. nVidia prices are dropping like crazy atm so looks like there will also be some good deals all round so may be worth you sitting it out for a while and snapping up a bargain. . . only problem is that you kinda need to sell your old card sooner than later maybe?

The HD4870 is great piece of kit but I don't feel it offers an extra £60 worth of performance over the HD4850, check this thread for results and see what you think! :D
 
If AA is a must for you then upgrade to the 4850 or 4870 if you have money to spare.

Otherwise it's already too late to jump on the "sell GT get 4850" wagon as 8800GT is already worth only pennies.

My GT still runs everything fine on 1680x1050 even if it means I have to settle with lower AA/AF settings.
