Sorry to post yet another of these threads, but I am pretty clueless when it comes to TFTs.

I'm getting a payrise very soon and feel like blowing some of my new found wealth on a TFT as I think my dear old CRT is on its last legs :(

I've got my choices narrowed down to these..

Xerox XA7-19i 8ms 19" LCD Monitor or..

NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2 20.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor.

I quite like the Xerox monitor as they use them at one of the 3D modelling companies I do work for. From what I've seen, they look quite fancy, the picture quality is good and I like the idea of the glass front.

As for the NEC, its a lot more expensive than the NEC, but I have seen lots of good reviews and it does seem to be quite a nice screen. Have fancied going widescreen but not sure if the 20inch widescreen would be that much different over a standard 19inch. I do watch a lot of movies, programs and game a lot on my PC if that makes any difference?

Other things I've heard about are putting me off getting a TFT at the moment. Things like light bleed and dead pixels. Are these fairly rare or am I worrying about nothing?

Cheers for any advice:)

i think the main thing you need to understand when comparing two screens like this is the panel technologies being used. The NEC LCD20WGX2 and Xerox XA7-19i are using very different panel technologies. The NEC is using an AS-IPS panel, whereas the Xerox is using TN Film. If you want to find out a bit more about these just take a quick look here, it might help :) Basically, performance wise, TN Film is traditionally a budget and gaming technology. Panel responsiveness is good, but viewing angles are restrictive, especially vertically, movie playback can be noisy and black depth and colour depth are inferior to other technologies. On the other hand IPS / VA panels are much more all round, with wide viewing angles, good black depth, good colour accuracy and depth and often better movie playback. In the case of these screens, expect good responsivness from the Xerox, but actually outdone by the NEC! The NEC pretty much wins in every area of performance, with much wider viewing angles, better colour depth (8 bit instead of 6 bit) and better black depth (aided by the DFC technology to give that 1600:1 contrast ratio). movie playback is still quite noisy on the NEC, and that's probably it's only common gripe. To many it's not an issue at all though, and certainly from a metre or two away, it won't matter.

The extra size of the NEC would be really nice, especially to future proof yourself. The extra resolution is great for windows work, and WS aspect is very good obviously for movies, and also for gaming. The NEC is very popular at the moment, has some fantastic performance, a great spec and some very nice extra features (OptiClear coating if you like glossy screens, DFC technology). The Xerox is good, and looks a nice screen in design, but it's performance won't match a model like the 20WGX2

Good site, thanks for the advice. I think you've swayed me towards the NEC.. Just need to wait a couple more weeks for the money to hit the bank and then it'll be straight back out again and a shiny new monitor will be mine:D

Cheers:)

Just out of interest what sort of size is a 20inch widescreen compared to a normal 19inch? Is it slightly shorter and about an inch wider?

Just some info for you, i just bought an Zerox XAP17" TFT with the glass front and it is awesome! The picture quality is superb and with the glass front, so easy to clean! :D
