Hello!

Early last year I made a new build, specs:

The thing on my mind is the 580, I can't decide whether to SLI or not, as I feel the system has more to give in games etc. My CPU is already overclocked to 4.2 (nice low temps, didn't want to push it to far) but I feel I need more!

The prob I have is finding a gainwood 580 good edition..am I right in thinking to sli it would need to be the same model/brand? Sli is all new to me, so want to know the ins and outs of it - what peoples opinions are of giving the graphics side a bit more of a boost perhaps?

Thanks in advance :p

You can SLI any GTX 580 with any other as long as they share the same memory size.

It might be an idea to sell your GTX 580 and get a GTX 670 or HD 7950 as this will give more GPU muscle than your GTX 580 and also has a larger vram memory.

So you reckon it would be more worth while selling? Is there a noticeable difference by getting just the 670 or is it worth spending the extra on sli?

You can see the differences in the link below. It also depends what games you play and how much vram they need also what resolution.

Heres a comparrison for GTX 580 sli vs GTX 670

The GTX 580 sli set is the faster option for most things but they are limited by the 1.5gbs of vram which could cause problems at higher resolutions in some of the latest games.

The other thing to remember when using anandtech for comparing is that drivers improve and also no account is taken of a cards ocing ability (the 670 is a very good ocer).

What resolution do you game at ?

Resolution wise I game at the max my monitor can do - which is 1680x1050.

So by the looks of it getting another 580 in sli would be a good bet as I don't game at huge resolutions? As you can see from the pic above its a 580 good edition.

At the above resolution your GTX 580 should be fine on its own. GTX 580 sli would probably be overkill.

Do you have any games where you are getting low frame rates ?

Id sell up id say 1 card is nearly always better then 2 for issues. I know its getting better but 580s are going oldish now and a 7950 is better for nearly £200.

Try sell it for like £150 im sure some sucker will buy it.

My bro has a 580 however and i see no real need to upgrade tbh?

I didn't think there was any need until i downloaded crysis 2 etc and saw it struggle, even at my resolution i play at!

In that case I would go down the one card route either the GTX 670 or HD 7950. The HD 7950 is cheaper and a little faster with more vram but some people prefer nvidia.
