Wondering if anyone can help me, i had problems trying to 'upgrade' mt vista to win7, to cut it short it didn't work. I installed clean from bootup without format so i could get to my files still.

There are old windows backup / install folder i can't seem to delete, there generally called WINDOWS~Q or something, keep saying acess denied and only 'trusted installer' has access.

I've gone into the security and tried to change the permissions to me but i just get access denied.

Even when i change the ownership to me it tells me i need permission from.....well me, how does that work?

might be worth trying booting into safe mode and trying it, either keep hitting F8 during boot, or from within vista:

click start
enter msconfig into search and hit enter
goto the boot tab
put a tick in Safe boot (with Minimal radio button)
reboot

can you explain your current set up (hard disks, partitions), what kind of windows 7 media you have (full retail or upgrade), how you went about upgrading, and how you want your system once you've finished (dual boot windows 7 and vista, or just windows 7).

thanks for that, went in using safe mode but at the same time i realised something i had either not read or missed before, i had changed ownership to me and given myself full control but it still wouldn't let me delete the folders.

I was changed to full acess under the 'edit' option of the security tab, i needed to do the permissions under the Advanced option using the first tab after using the 3rd tab to set owner, i thien highlighted my user, clicked edit of which i didn't need to change anything but i did need to click the 'apply these changes to objects/or containers within this cotainer', click okay and then also tick, 'replace child objext with inheritable permissions from this object'. Then it worked and i was able to delete the folders.

What a run around, got me 26Gb of hdd space though.
