im on vista laptop by the way..

i cant seem to delete some files off my laptop.

when i try to delete it it says:

"the action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program.
close the file and try again."

the program is not even open (checked task manager)
i tried restarting the laptop but didnt work
tried deleting it in safe mode but didnt work.

any ideas?

I suspect that the error is due to windows explorer creating thumbnail type information ... have you tried navigating to the directory and then just waiting for a while.

what do you mean by navigating to the directory?

like moving it to another folder? i tried that =/ still same thing.

any other ideas?

A couple things I can think of that would cause this.

One is as memyselfandi said -- the Windows preview has the file locked. Have to let it run it's paces for a minute or so or disable the preview option.

The next is the "trailing space" issue that a lot of people encounter. Check Cause #6 at this kb article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320081

Cause #4 from that same article is very common as well.

ok maybe i didnt explain in detail =/

my file is called 'DELETE.mp4' and is on the desktop

i can run it and eveything (plays the video), but it cannot be deleted =/

i doubt its the trailing space, or cause #4

so.. any other solutions? =/

ive had similar things happen, play a different file in the media player that you used, then try to delete it
