it used to work fine but for the last 2 weeks i can get my 2 pcs to connect to each other properly

they both connect to the same switch and after disabling all firewalls,

they can ping each other fine,
i can see the other PC in net places and see the shares but it times out accessing them

i havent disabled any services or anything on either one. the XP firewall is off.

i was messing around in the last few days on getting vista working in virtual PC so decided to test it with that to find out which pc was to blame. stupidly, both pcs share files fine with vista, just not with each other.

help

p.s
both main pcs are on xp pro - sp2. all firewalls disabled etc

Is "use simple file sharing" (in folder options) selected or not - make sure bothe are the same.

Set each computer to the same workgroup
Name each computer
Create same usernames and passwords on each PC's
Disable window firewall service on both PC's
Create a shared directory on each PC and allow permissions to everyone.
Search "My Network Places" for the other computer name. It should fit it, create a shortcut on the desktop.

all thats ok

they can see each other in net places just fine, they just arent able to access.

as said in the OP, no firewalls are running but both work fine going through a diff PC

yep, still the same.

i would be ready to blame on or the other but that wouldnt make sense if it works with the vista vPC

I ain't gonna type it all out again... but try the hints in this thread:

I assume you have made sure the firewalls are punched through? And ALWAYS the easiest way is to bypass the hit-n-miss Windoze networking and use the IP Addresses.

In the explorer bar or run... prompt, \\192.168.0.10\shareddocs or whatever will be the easiest. ;)

tried that too. lets me see the folders but not access them.

also its not a firewall prob since i can ping the other absolutely fine - also the fact that as i said in the OP - the firewalls are off. more than that, they are uninstalled now and still the same.

if it was a firewall fault, then surely it would block vista too?

will check out the links tho

When you are trying to connect, do the XP user accounts have passwords? Don't forget that default policy in XP Pro is to refuse access to accounts without passwords.

What I do on my network is setup extra users on each PC purely for network logins. Using the (Right Click "My Computer", Select "Manage", choose "Local Users and Groups") tool I setup a user as follows...

(This assumes you are not using "Simple File Sharing" as we want to mess with "real" NT User Rights here....)
Create a new user.
Give this new user a password.
Change the groups it belongs to so it is in No group (i.e. remove the default "Users" group.) This stops it having a local login, so stops it appearing on the login screen on that PC.

Now for each share, make sure this user is included on the Sharing page, and give them some rights.
Make sure the folders also allow the rights for this user to read and/or change things as you see fit.
Repeat - the name needs to appear both on the "Sharing" page and the "Security" page.

Now when you connect from each PC, use this user to login with. You have a username and password to be used in each case. And these can be cached on the machine if needed. :D

Also note, it could be easier, but less secure, to just edit the Group Policies on each XP Pro machine to allow users to connect without a password... but this is inhrently risk :)
