at work I hear guys saying they cant join a host to the W2k domain from a different subnet(everything else is ok, full 7 layer connectivity across the subnets in question).....now I`m sure this should be strightforward but I dont know their set up.... I`m guessign they are not using the W2k domain controller for DNS and I`m guessign that this could cause problems as from memory doesnt a host need to find the DC etc adn capabilites of such with srv records etc??, any ideas welcomed, my memory fo this stuff is not good...cheers....

Yep, sounds like duffed up DNS. You don't have to use Windows based DNS, let alone have DNS running on the DC - my internal DNS is all done with BIND on some Linux boxes. As long as you get dynamic DNS working then you're ok.

Yeah the primary DNS in your TCP/IP settings should be pointing to a domain controller for the domain you are trying to join assuming the DC is providing DNS for that domain (or as burbleflop says to the DNS server that is hosting the domain)
