i also stopped pushing lever first time (Asus p8p67 pro) because it felt very tight, i checked cpu and mobo pins few times before i fixed cpu finally
be careful, here was a guy, who damaged cpu socket pins quite seriously, he even made threat here

The CPU can only go in one way; the socket has notches for this. The levers are always quite hard to clip into place, but the socket is designed to hold the CPU very firmly. The pins will make small indentations onto the contact pads of the CPU and this is normal.

I agree its a very tight fight and mine reuired quite a bit of force to lock into place.

Any chance of some pics of the socket and we can tell you if the pins are bent.

If you look in your manual that came with the motherboard there are step by step instructions how to insert the cpu into the socket. You appear to have done it correctly the first time so do not stress. And yes it takes some effort with the new socket retention clips to close the mechanism.

Op ur pins are fine insert socket with notches in correct position and don't worry about the noise it makes when u pull the socket lever

Socket look fine to me.

As long as the notches line up, it does require a lot of force to clip the cpu in! I was amazed myself. Its normal to think that the board is about to snap in too!
there was nothing like the ZIF socket (Until the heatsink compound 'set! and removing the cooler removed the CPU!)
