cant get 2 different resolutions, one is tv

i have a 6800gt running the latest drivers connected to a dell lcd and a sony tv. i am trying to set a different resolution on the tv output so i can watch movies. i am currently in clone mode at 1280 x 1024 but i can only see 3/4 of the screen on the tv and it seems to auto pan when i move the mouse. when i try and set a differnt resolution on the tv the option is greyed out and i have to tick 'show only physical panning resolution' but that just makes it worse.

i know i have got this working before in some sort of horizontal mode and i could drag the movie windo to the tv and maximise and it was perfect, but i cant see how to set 2 different resolutions?

not sure if you can do what you're trying, after all if you're cloning a screen, surely it has to be at the same res, and obviously a tv can't do 1280x1024 without panning.

horizontal span is probably the best route.
