This is somethign thats bugged the hell out of me recently.
I got 3 PCs based around the AMD Socket 754 CPU.
1. DFI LP250GB UT ( ClawHammer 3700 )
2. ECS NForce 3A ( NewCastle 3000 )
3. Gigabyte K8 VT800M ( Sempron 3100 )
And one thing I have noticed on all 3 of these, is that HD performance is absolutely pathetic... Well, thats not entirely true, its actually very good, but not if I am copying over a lot of data or any sizeable files, and definitely not if I am copying to/from a SATA drive on it either.
I mean... I ran the benchmark from Performance test v4 on the ECS board this morning, and bloody hell, for the first 20% of the test, apparently, it was reading 600MB+ and the bar went up accordingly, in about half a second, but then it slowed down, and by the time it got to about 50% it had slowed down to a shabby 10MB... The entire test was well over a minute.
I have also done a few other silly little tests such as copying over a 1GB VOB file and the bar went again, to roughly about 1/4 of the way fairly quickly, but by the time it was at half way, WinAmp started to drop the music, the mouse started to hang and the end of it I was looking towards it taking 5 minutes to copy just 1GB... This is with Copying to or from the IDE Drive, to the SATA Drive.
Now, I have half-cured the DFI and what I have done, is simply use 2 IDE Drives instead of one IDE and one SATA, and thats fine for now, but unfortunately the ECS now has one SATA and one PATA and the Gigabyte is just a pile of crud anyway, so I dont really care too much about that, but now in the ECS, its slower than ever!
So, is it the SATA on these boards?
One way to find out, is to install to SATA but thats fine, so I added the IDE drive back and did some copying over and its gone poo-poo again?
Ok, IDE or SATA, but not both then?
This does indeed seem to be it, so what could cause this to happen pretty perfectly on all 3 boards?
Its not the BIOS settings like DMA for sure, however, I cannot find any form of adjusting this on the ECS, the Gigabyte and the DFI are set and yes, I have tried various other settings too, but its as good as I can get it, and the BIOSes on all 3 boards are the latest I can find, but agin, thats unlikely to be the problem as all 3 are different altogether, so can it be drivers? Doubtful as the Gigabyte is VIA and the other 2 are NForce3 however, I have tried various other drivers but no help there either.

I have a fair few boards both Socket A and Socket 939, that I mix PATA & SATA and these dont give me any such issues, its only the Socket 754 ones that I get this problem with,
I have tried Windows 2000, Windows XP Home, Pro, and XP64, but they all do exactly the same thing.
Anyone offer anything?
