Behind you... Naked!
Annoying one this, but until recently, my main system has been running an X800GTO2 @ X850 right... Its got an artic cooler on, the CPU ( E6300 @ 3.5 ( Ouch ) ) has an Artic freezer on, the case is a Thermaltake Armor and has been using the stock fans on that just fine, its been totally silent, and has been hovering at a nice 44c ( CPU this is ) for the last... What? year and a bit?

Now, a couple of months ago, I threw in an POV 8800GTS, and the CPU temps shot up??

I have got another 8800GTS and I have stuffed them into a PCupstairs to toy with SLI for a bit ( waste of time TBH ) and I got an X1800XT instead.

Now, the thing is, that the CPU temps are staying above 60c... Mostly around 68c or 69c and I had now knocked it back to stock and even there, I was floating at 57-58c

WTF?

Anyway, as a quick fix, I threw in a pair of Delta 120mm fans ( Ear bleeders ) in front and rear to get some decent air through and it helped, the CPU was now 49 or 50c

But what the hell could be causing the temps to shoot up so much?

Tonight I will be stripping the whole thing down, making doubly sure that no dust has somehow got wedged into anywhere it should not, or een a screw or whatever???

Its got me really buggered it has.

Any clues?

hmmm,it is a strange one. sounds like there is either a build up of dust on the hsf, or it is giving uo the ghost. Take the hsf off and if there is an excess of dust blow it off, then check if the other case fans are running efficently/also check for dust. sounds like the caese needs more ventillation. as a rule the X1800XT or any powerful gfx cards run a bit hot, my bfg 8800gtx oc does, which is why I've got a 120mm fan front, side (over gfx card) and rear of the case which seems to reduce the ambiant temp of my case/cpu a bit

Yes, dust had been my first thought, due to the fact that every month,I need to take the foams off etc and get tons of dust off the things, plus a few nooks & crannies etc get blocked up, however, this was different... It didnt creep up, it didnt even rise quickly... It was cool, then it just boiled over ???

One day it was under 50c and the nnext it was bleeping like hell and I had to raise the warning to 70c and then I had to run it stock just to get it to STFU!!!

Anyway... Im half way home right now.

I stripped the lot down, and I got loads of dust out, but as expected, the dust was nowhere in anywhere enough to get the temps as they were.

I have lost the top 92mm fan holder thingy so mounting a top 92mm fan isnt going to be easy if at all.

I have stuck a tornado now into the back 92mm slot blowing into the case ( got the Raptor & 2xHitachi Drives in there ) and also the PSU has its 120mm ( swapped for an akasa 48CFM job ). The front and back fans are now back to stock ( the Delats are 38mm thick you see and I need 25mm so I will be ordering a couple of new fans tonight.

I have a sweet little side on cooler thingythat I did use before, taht blows kind of onto the top of the GFX and onto the NB HeatSink and this kept the NB stone cold, however, the cooler on this X1800XT is sticking way out and so thats now out of the question ( at this time ) and so, Im now 50-50 on whether to mod the case to accept a 120mm on the side??- If I do that, then Im going to have to buy another top-down cooler for the CPU instead of this side on jobbie.

Anyway,Im now at 53/54c and at stock, and at least its quiet for now.

My Audio card has gone a bit pete tong in that I can no longer get it to do 5.1 Audio and I hope they are not linked???

Anyway, update as and when yea?
