Hi all,

A friend of mine forced a shutdown on his laptop when it appeared to have frozen. Since then, it's not been booting into Vista. I've tried safe mode, and it just sits on the driver loading screen and does nothing (the most recently loaded driver being the display I believe), and trying it with 'last known good config' gets me to the normal vista loading bar but again, it sits there ticking over but getting nowhere.

I noticed that the activity on the HD was merrily flickering away under both loading conditions, but then abruptly stops and thereafter does nothing whatsoever.

Any ideas how I might get around this?

Cheers in advance!

Can I do that with any Vista disk? Like if I don't have a Home Basic disk (which is what's on the laptop) but do have an Ultimate?

I'm not too sure on that, if you boot it and it doesn't give you the option then no :D.

Alternatively grab a Linux live/rescue CD and you can copy all the files off as either backup or as a last resort before formatting.
