Just upgraded my ancient gigabyte Z68 ds3 to an MSI Z97. Changed cpu from a 2500k to an 4670k.

I can't get the system to post at all with my r9 290 installed. Soon as I take it out and reset cmos I can use the on board HD4000 and get into windows fine and reboot everytime with no problems. With the 290 in I just get a black screen, no hdd noise, no peripheral lights.

The very first time I switched the system on after building I got into the bios with the 290, made some boot changes, rebooted to install windows and it hasn't worked since.

Tried resetting cmos many times. Not sure why a previously working card refuses to work on this new motherboard!

Updated to latest bios, still nothing. When I plug in the 290 it powers but no hdd activity, no mouse and keyboard lights.

I took the 290 out again to go back to working intel graphics but I just got some multi coloured lines. Rebooted and now I keep getting an infinite black screen.

Dead mobo?

What PSU are you using? This points out to the card not having enough power or power cables not plugged in.

Tried a latest bios. Flashed it fine, got back into windows so I thought i'd try the 290 again. Still same problem. 24 and 8 in with 6 and 8 on 290.

PSU is only a month old, Seasonic M12 II Bronze Evo Edition 850w and it was previously powering my gigabyte motherboard, 2500k @ 4.7, 12GB hyper x blue and this r9 290

Booted up this morning for last round of tests before I RMA. I can't even get it to post without the 290 installed now. I used the on board graphics and as the 28 logo came up I got some fuzzy coloured lines and it rebooted. Haven't been able to get anything out of it since.

Right here's an update.

I managed to reset cmos with the battery out. Jumpers weren't working for that.

The system is all up and running with onboard graphics and 2 hard drives. I'm in windows 8.1 and everything seems fine for the last few hours.

When I add the 290 i Just get the black screen and no booting.

I'm sure haswell uses less power than my previous sandy i5 at 4.7ghz right? This is a stock 4670k. So I can't understand that my PSU might of gone or it doesn't have enough juice, yet it's still powering the system now.

SOLVED

As I was about the rip it out and send back to OCUK.... I noticed my 290, even though clicked into the motherboard could still be pushed down a few mm. I pressed down on the card while booting and it works!

Now in the process of modding my case I guess..

Antec 300 case - MSI Z97 G43 - Sapphire 290 reference.
