Behind you... Naked!
I have just given my daughter a new build. She wants Linux back onto it ( good girl ) and so, I threw MINT-KDE onto it.

The snag is, that I cannot get it to go anywhere over 1024x768

I have not had to do any deep hard work with Linux for some time and quite frankly I am no good anymore and so, Im kind of lost at what to do?

The graphics card, is an old ATI 4860, however, I also have a GTX260 that I am also happy to use instead. The ATI is quieter and uses less power so thats why thats currently used.

The O/S is KDE MINT 17.2 64Bit.

It has not found any extra drivers for it, as it usually does this on my other builds, and I am going to re-try with Sabayon tonight, but in the meantime, can anyone point me to the right area for helping me out please?

The easiest way to get accelerated graphics would be to use the nVidia -- the AMD drivers are always quite lame.
Install the nvidia binary drivers (theres probably a mint package to do that) and it should be fine and stable.

Otherwise, you could try to install the 'nouveau' open source drivers, and worst case scenario, the 'fbdev' ones for xorg, but that will be a lot slower...

From what I remember, AMD dropped support for older cards out of it's official driver (and does so quite regularly to the point that some chipsets never even get supported), so you need to install the open source one. Catalyst (fglrx) is the AMD one. Older cards require xf86-video-ati, or whatever it may be on your system. On my Fedora system it is named xorg-x11-drv-ati.

Well, I plopped the GTX260 in there, it found a list of drivers so I went for the recommended one. v340 it was. I managed to get it to 1366x768 so thats better, but no cigar, and then all of a sudden, it hung?

After a restart I found that it was hanging as soon as I clicked the right button, or when it tried to bring up the right click menu.

I did some messing about, however, this would not go away.

I then did a fresh install and went for the older Legacy drivers that were in that list v304... Made no difference, the mouse click still caused it to hang.

I tried a GTx470 and a 680, since they're a fair bit newer, but the hanging is still there?

I have put the ATI back in and the hanging has stopped.

I am going to move off MINT for now and try a different distro... my Linux Laptop is using ATI and I have had no issues gettign that setup and I play all my steam games just great, and Wine sorts out the non steam stuff.

I will go with Sabayon and the ATI card and try another distro then, see what happens?

And yeah, I know the ATI is old, but its spare you see... I want something that gives a lovely crisp display and can play basic games if needed. That card should be fine.

On its way out?

Maybe, its not the youngest card I have, I grant you, and its been in a box with a lood of other bits, so I wont argue that one, however I did get the very same issues with other nVidia cards.

The ATI is running sexy sweet with Sabayon right now. The Rez I set to 1920x1080 and its doing exactly whats ronseal said it would.
