I have been trying to overclock my Q8300. I have got it to around 2.79 stable by setting the FSB to 370 and upping the voltage a little but any futher and its not stable when i run prime95.

I tryed setting the DRAM Freq to DDR2 - 761 as it stated this was the speed of it through the BIOS.

Because my RAM is mixed is this not allowing me to overclock further?? I have 2x2G paired and 2x1G which are different makes.

Not sure what the PCIE Freq, FSB strap to NB etc does.

Any Suggestions???

Hey, so took out the odd stick of RAM and I can clock it further now. But I cant see where I can set the multiplier myself. It seems to be locked at around 7.5.

You'll want some quality DDR2 800 or higher tbh. Core 2 clocking is a product of FSB x Multiplier

And a reasonable cooler, something like the AC Freezer 7 rev 2 for about £20

I thought the multiplier was set by the motherboard and not with the CPU. Would there be much of a performance difference if i changed from 5G PC- 5300 to 4G PC-8500???

Well you're probably at the limit of your 5400 ram (667mhz) as your already at 740mhz (370x2)

Depends upon the board too, but Asus boards are usually good. I have a P5Q which happily does 400mhz fsb with my Q6600 and PC6400.

At 400mhz you'd only be at 3.0ghz. Q8400 aren't famous overvlockers for that reason. With good cooling you may get 3.6 at a max I'd guess (480fsb x 7.5) but the key word is may!

Hopefully someone with experiance of Q8xxx clocking will chime in :)

Yea i plan to get a half decent CPU cooler and update the RAM probably.

Would like to get it to around 3.2 for a start. Im going to possibly get a GTX 470 in there as well in the next month or so as i would like to start playing games and dont want the system to bottleneck.

So with Q8300 @3.2(possibly)
GTX 470
4G PC-8500
what would that be like for a gaming system?

Thanks for the advice.
