Just got a new router bundled with this usb adapter

Connected fine, found the network but can't connect to internet due to no default gateway in ipconfig, Netgear routers are usually http://192.168.0.1/ that doesn't work.

It's in the other room with no Ethernet cable only power + phone, the Internet icon has gone green.

Do router have to have atleast 1 Ethernet cable to be configured/used?

Has it given you an IP over DHCP or have you got an automatic private 169.x address?

if the router is 192.168.0.1 then you need to be on the same subnet, ie 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 set your IP manualy to something within this range and you should be able to connect to your router.

Also im not sure about the netgear routers, but by default my linksys wrt54gl only allowed connections to its config page via ethernet, allowing configuration via wireless had to be enabled first before it would work.

Ah right, was think it might be that, will it work wirelessly after I've set it up via ethernet?

Bit too late now, I'll try it tomorrow.

I've never had an ethernet cable plugged into my Netgear. I set it all up via wireless.

I never trust wireless for configuring a router. I configured my router over the wireless and it didn't save the information, no matter how I did it, and I had to use a network cable and I Just plug in the cable and change ethernet properties to something on the same IP Range as the router for the wired.
