been running my pc on new 4k tv and it runs fine (dvi to hdmi) except i cannot set the res to anything higher than 1080p?

Could be..... limited DVI res, or limited res on the specific input. Not all HDMI sockets on the TV are 4K capable

You'll need at dual DVI cable go anything above 1080p I believe though I'm not sure if it will do 4k, I encountered a similar problem a few years ago when I bought my 30" 1600p monitor and I initially thought it was faulty.....doh...

I used a cheapy HDMI cable from the HDMI out of my laptop when I tried this on a neighbours 4K telly, only 30Hz but sat close up in front of a 50" screen is super immersive in FSX.

I wonder if there are dual-link DVI to HDMI adaptors, or whether they are single link?

It would also help if the OP mentioned make of TV and the GFX card in use. My Intel HD work PC couldn't drive a 1600p monitor, so no chance with a 4K one,.I had to put a cheap discrete GFX card in.

HDMI 1.4a will only do 4K @30Hz max
DVI will only do max 2560X1600 max
DP will do 4K @ 60hz but the tv does not have a DP input so no possible.

There are DP to HDMI active adapters out there but again your limited to 4K @ 30hz and i have not seen any that support 4K @60hz yet although they are supposed to be in the pipeline.

The only other option it to change GPU to one with a HDMI 2.0 output like the Nvidia gtx970 ect.
