Can't have wireless and wired connection at same time via hub

Hi all. Got a quick question from a friend of mine. He's can't connect pc and wireless (for laptop) to net at same time. His config is: cable modem-5 port hub and in that he has his pc and wireless router plugged in. He's tried all the diagnostic tools in vista, rebooting all devices, device searches etc. Any ideas? So he connects the laptop wireless to the router and wired to the hub?

The hub's pointless - you can only have one machine connected to the cable modem at a time.

Sounds like he hasn't got the cable modem connected correctly to the router.
The cable modem should be connected directly to the WAN port on the router and then the rest of the kit connected to the router's lan ports. He's not trying to use an ADSL router is he?
