Can't Install any .msi files

Hi all,

bit of a weird one this, currently running Win 8 CP and I can't seem to install ANY .msi files, even ones contained in within in exe file.

For example trying to install vmware workstation I get this error:



no idea why... tried installing with admin rights... no change.

any ideas?
