Can't install appplications from different drives other than my OS drive

If I put the installer package on my OS drive and run it I have no problems but if I try running an installer from a different drive it always tells me there was an error reading the file.

Any ideas why?

Windows 10 Pro, using an administrator account and use run as admin if possible.

For example, I downloaded Duplicati's installer and put it on my E: drive. When I double click to run it, it gives me the read error message. If I then move it to my C: drive (Windows drive), it installs just fine.

very odd. what's the exact error?

The first thing that pops to mind is that you don't own the separate drive, it's the only thing that's ever given me issues like this.

I just tried installing Audacity from the same folder and it worked, so I'm guessing Duplicati has some weird permission issue.

Still, it shouldn't be doing this...

Do you own the file? and have you tried downloading it again in case it's corrupt?

Is it just this file or are there other ones?

I own the file, yes. Tried downloading multiple times, yes.

Just Windows Defender

I found out that .msi files need special permissions to install but that doesn't explain why it works for me on my Windows drive, but not the others.

move the file to the root level folder on the harddrive and try it.

The error message could just be misleading - does app not leave a more detailed install log ? most apps do under windows directory.
If you put install on another volume eg. usb does that still fail ?

Doesn't install, nor does it install on the other 3 SATA drives I have.

It installs from two different USB drives...

maybe try lowering down the UAC slide bar if enabled.

May I ask why your using the high contrast mode? I'm just curious as nothing to do with the issue.

Maybe add "everyone", give full permissions and make them the owner

do you have another windows account you can try?

UAC is off. I have given myself full permissions for everything.

I use it because the white light makes my eyes tire faster. I also use Flux to get rid of blue light and the stylish extension for Chrome to make all my most commonly visited sites have a black theme. My eyes last much longer under long sessions.

that's fair enough, we turn the high contrast mode on using key combinations if people leave their PC's unlocked at work and walk away from their desks then see how long it takes for them to turn it off again

could the issue be that you only have your account as having access?

most exe files also have SYSTEM in the list as well as the user and administrators. Add system and give it another try

That worked perfectly. Don't think I ever got rid of all users bar myself as I recently did a fresh Windows 10 install. In either case, well done sir.
