Behind you... Naked!
I am having some issues trying to get Linux onto my Gigabyte DS3.

Dotn know why it wont go, but it just wont?

Ok, Fedora, CentOS, SuSE & Mandriva cant find any HDs... They do however ask abotu loading the drivers, so maybe, just maybe...
Ubuntu ( and K and X and edu ) just hang when trying to load the kernel from the CD or DVD
Gentoo wont go at all.

I am lost?

What have I tried?

Well, right now, I only need to try out Linux on it really, and so I have bought an 80GB to play with.

I have tried a number of HDs ( WD, Maxtor, Seagate and Hitachi ) on all 6 different SATA Ports.

I have NOT tried a standard IDE on the IDE line, and this may very be an option, but it will only be a temorary option as its only got the one IDE line and I am already short on them as it is.

I have a sneaky feeling that its simply that Linux is unable to boot from a Sata drive perhaps because I also failed to install a few Linux Distros on my other Intel Sata Mobo.

Not had any such issues with AMD Boards though?

Anyway, if anyone can help out, then I would be in your debt

( To the tune of a coke ... Can that is, not Sherbert )

Do you not get any errors in dmesg when you try to boot the CD? Kernel panic or similar? Linux certainly can boot from SATA (I do it here). What is the last message before it hangs?

Kernel Panic.
Actually, I have had panics... On...Erm, not sure now.
I will get back to you on this one later on.

SATA INSTALL.
No, thats just it... I have had it running on SATA just fine on my AMD Boards, but I have never managed it on the Intel boards... I am assuming its just bad luck.

I've noticed unless you use the 2.6.11+ kernel, there are problems with PATA on i965/975x mobo's, which normally means the cdrom stops working :(

I've not noticed anything the other way tho

there seems to be some info on 965/975x on the ubuntu wiki

Cool. I will have a peek in a few...

Many thanks guys.
