I have been trying to install puppy on this ancient pc from 2004 with a celeron 2.4ghzs, 256mb of ram and 80gb ide hard drive but the asrock P4i45GV can't pick up on the boot flag or something, even though I have given it a boot flag and the right partitions with gparted so I think its something to do with grub. So as of right now I am stuck.

Grub allows you to choose the which operating system you want to boot from, therefore I don't really know what to do.
I don't really want to use my main pc, so that my partitions don't mess up and just in case grub decides not to work again.

Right, but does it get as far as the grub menu or what?

There's no danger moving the drive to another machine to test (rule out the mobo as the issue). If you're worried just unplug all the other drives.

if you don't manage to overcome the issue with booting off the hard disk, you could try booting from a usb stick and using the disk for the \home directory.

last time i had puppy running i set it up that way. was just trying it out with the intention of a "proper" disk install later, but it worked so well i never bothered.
