I'm hoping someone here can offer some advice

I've just built a new computer;

Sempron 2400
512mb PC3200
LG DVD-RW
Seagate 80GB IDE

everything in it is new basically. When I come to install windows xp home, it does the usual "setup is inspecting hardware configuration screen" then gets to the usual blue screen. However, this blue screen is as far as it gets. It doesn't start to say "Press F6 to install SATA drivers". It just sits there, doing absolutely sweet fa.

I've tried different RAM, 2 other hard drives, removing the floppy drive, another optical drive, different windows xp installation discs. My last option is the motherboard, but I'm hoping someone else has some other suggestions first.

The hard drive is formatted so has nothing on it. Any ideas?

Too many times have I had a PC that doesn't give ANY error messages, yet something still goes wrong

I'm off to bed as I'm about to break down. Will check back tomorrow.

how long does it hang there for? sometimes takes a while tbh

try different cd-r media maybe?, also, try swapping ide channels and perhapds ide cables..

no overheating is it? check in the bios for temps of the cpu, maybe try with the case side off

hope it gets sorted!

I've left it for about 5-10 minutes just incase :(

So far I've tried windows xp home on cd and two dvd installs of xp home. Will have a look at different IDE channels and cables though.

It's sitting at 47degrees which is quite hot for a sempron I guess :\ I'll try reapplying TC and reseating.

Well, just swapped the motherboard with another one I had lying around. It now works. I'm pleased but still angry that it gave no error messages!

I still don't know what the problem was either, as replacing the motherboard means refitting everything that could have been causing the problem in the first place!

Ah well, thanks all, problem solved :)

Ok, I spoke to soon. It's now doing exactly the same thing on the new motherboard

Thread re-opened!

Weird that it should be, tried your optical drive on a seperate ide channel? (that sounds terribly posh! :D)

Yeah i'd tried a seperate dvd-drive altogether on both IDE channels with different IDE cables.

Meh, problem has resolved itself now it seems :\ I'll just wait for the call saying the computer has died :p
