My nephew is having diffs with his Dell Dimension 9200. I don't know much about the spec other than its a Core 2 with Vista 32 home premium and about 2 years old. System has been running well up to now and is used for the usual sort of things, bit of gaming, music etc.

In the last couple of days he hasn't been able to boot into Windows and keeps getting the error message above. He hasn't tried starting in safe mode as he has little computer experience so I intend to call and help him later.

Any ideas of what is causing this and how I might be able to fix it for him?

Thanks

First go into the Bios and make sure he hasn't been trying to overclock his laptop and set everything back to its defaults. I would stick the Vista disk in and try to repair the fault.

You could also try going into Safe Mode (F8 Boot Menu) and using System Restore

Thanks Mystic - should have said its a desktop not a lappy.

Does this seem like a dying hard drive or is this a common issue?

I used to get this same error with XP when using an old-ish mobo, Iwill KK266, system would be running fine, shutdown fine but then on next reboot the above error would halt the boot.

Only a re-install would fix the problem, never got to the bottom of it as I got sick and tired of it and sold the mobo on and touch wood have never seen it again with my newer mobos.
