Hello so i have a dell inspiron 5680, with 128gb ssd and 2tb hdd. I wanted to upgrade my sdd to a quicker/larger one.

I copied my files from my files from my ssd (including the windows folder) onto the hdd thinkin that i would be able to put my new ssd into the pc and load windows up from my hdd.

I rushed into doing it without researching and i realise now this isnt how it works and windows isnt installed on the hdd because i couldnt get it to load. I know im stupid.

Ive put my old ssd back in and i get the msg ‘checking media presence, no media found’ or it just goes into dell support assist.

After googling people said to go into the BIOS and select windows boot up to the first option, done that saved it and restarted but it dosent save it and just restarts back into dell support assist.

Dont know what to do now, im guessin the old ssd is just broke somehow.

Do i need to put windows onto a usb and do a fresh install then everything will be ok to transfer my files from my hdd?

You can use the windows 10 creation tool to do a usb stick and get it ready to boot from.

when doing the install make sure the HDD is not connected to prevent the installer trying to store files on this drive.

It's unlikely that it just broke, use the dell recovery assist and get to the point where it does a start up repair. Don't wipe the drive until you've tried to fix the issue or you'll lose all your personal data etc.
