Can't log in to windows!

My computer had a bit of a fit - froze etc and required a reset (Win XP)

When it next booted up, it wouldn't let me run half of my programs and then produced a warning box saying that an error in the registry had been fixed.

I restarted again and this time I get a Windows Log On box appear - I've never had it before and I can't seem to log in as anyone.

All I'd like to do is load up safe mode, restore to a previous good state and hope for the best but I can't get into Windows!

Any Ideas?

An update - it seems that when I put in my username & password, windows briefly loads and then the "Log On" box reappears - I'm caught in an endless loop.

I thought safe mode avoided the Log On box but it seems not.

sounds quiet complicated way of fixing, perhaps a quicker way would have been just a simple repair?

With a Pre-Installer such as Super WinPE 2005 you would be able to sort this problem in a matter of seconds!! Everyone should have WinPE
