Can't open Start menu button!

Hi guys, all of a sudden today i can't seem to open start menu button. Everytime i click on it it just makes a ding noise and doesn't open. Anyone possibly have a fix for this?

Another prog is running in background hogging system resources. CTRL+ALT+DEL to get task manager and log off via that and log back in again.

Press the windows key and e at the same time, does windows explorer open up?

yes it does, the start menu opens when i press the windows key so its nothing to do with that. Its just the start button
