Hey all,

It's been a very long time since I last bought a monitor, so I've spent a while researching all the latest tech. I currently have a GTX 970, but will probably be looking into upgrading to the GTX 1070 when it is released next month.

There are almost too many options when it comes to monitors, and the ones that tick all the boxes seem to be very expensive and come with Quality Control issues. TN vs IPS and 1080p vs 1440p - I'm willing to spend the money if it's going to be a quality monitor that will last me a long time.

My initial budget was between £200-300, and I was looking into a 24" monitor - However, with the upgrade from the 970 to the 1070, I'm looking at probably going 1440p, so it'll be 27" instead.
But then I don't see the point in spending £400 on a TN panel, when so many people say the difference between TN and IPS is so big.

I've had my sights on the AOC G2460PG for a long time, and I've been hoping it comes down in price (considering the FreeSync version is almost £100 cheaper) - But the longer I look, the more I'm considering splashing out on a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor.

Right now I'm using a very old 22" television as a monitor, and it stinks - I'm becoming desperate for a decent monitor, but as you can probably tell - I'm confused :p

Here are some monitors I've been considering:

AOC G2460PG - £290, 24", 1080p, 144Hz, TN - Been in my sights a while, looks fairly reliable, it's within my "budget", but it's 1080p and I'm worried I'll get buyers remorse after I upgrade my GPU and wished I went for a 1440p instead...

Dell S2716DG - £495, 27", 1440p, 144Hz, TN - I've owned a Dell before and their monitors are awesome, but it's almost £500. If I'm spending that much money anyway, surely I should be going for an IPS monitor?

Predator XB271HU - £590, 27", 1440p, 165Hz, IPS - It ticks all the boxes, but reading the thread on here puts me off due to the horrible Quality Control issues. If I spend this much on the monitor, it needs to be perfect.

The price of the 1440p monitors go up so much, I feel like I may as well just stretch my budget even more and go for an IPS monitor. In a perfect world, I'd buy a 1440p version of the G2460PG and it be priced at £300 :p

I have been waiting until after Computex finishes before purchasing, as I had heard about new monitors being announced - But I've heard very little about anything new in terms of 1440p IPS monitors...

Sorry for the long post, but I don't know what to go for :p Any thoughts to help clear my mind? :D

Thanks,
Marky

I am no expert when compared to the other folks on this forum but here goes...

You mention a monitor that is more of a long term option, therefore I would go for the 1440p and ips for the extra 100 to be more future proof. But that's just my opinion.

I was going to buy the very same dell you linked last week (it was £389 on weekly offer). But I too thought why spend £400 (now nearly £500 so forget tn) when long term I can get ips... Same thoughts as you!

I'm currently looking at the acer predator you linked or the asus pg279q-rog- swift (which i found £60 more somewhere else which I won't say where!)

You are very correct to be concerned about the QC of the PG279Q... I wouldn't go anywhere near it to be honest, and it's a shocking excuse for IPS. You may get lucky but personally I wouldn't risk it, especially if you want perfection... I think that's impossible with this monitor.

Of the others, the Dell is the best choice. It can be had for less than £500 if you shop around. If you're going for a 1070 you're right to be looking at 1440p monitors, and you won't regret the upgrade for a second! As TN goes it's a solid choice, same panel as the PG278Q (Swift) which is regarded as one of the best TN panels you can get. It won't match IPS for colour, but it's not too far off (after some tinkering with settings), and to be honest unless you're coming from a 1440p IPS panel you won't notice.

I've not seen much of note come out of Computex yet, and even if it does we won't be seeing anything become available for months. Monitors in-particular tend to get announced WAY before they are ever released, sometimes 6 months to a year away!

Well I'm assuming the Monitor is G-Sync at only 1080......but in game( BF4) I'm using 2560 x1400 144Hz...and to be honest it looks better at that resolution , colours are better too .

I would definitely go for the Dell @ sub-£500 price point. I use a PG287Q for gaming and love the 144Hz and G-Sync, it really is great tech and I wouldn't do without now. I personally think 1440p/27" is the sweet point for gaming too.

At the moment, I'm put off the high-speed IPS panels by the quality control issues on the Asus and Acer screens. I use my TN panel head on which helps, my second screen is a 32" 1440p VA and they both look similar in terms of IQ. I'd sacrifice a bit of IQ over backlight bleed/IPS glow any day as I use my screen a lot in the evening.

I'm absolutely gutted I missed the £389 deal on the Dell, I think I would have bought it immediately...

I just don't know if I can justify spending over £600 on a monitor... And like I said, if I did it would need to be perfect (I.e. No QC issues).

Thank you for your opinions, I really do think it's gotta be a 27" 1440P monitor, considering I'll be upgrading the GPU soon...
You've cooled my feelings towards the TN panels... I don't think I've ever experienced an IPS monitor, so maybe it's best to stay ignorant to them altogether :p

Do you know how bad the viewing angles are on the TNs? I'm going to have the monitor straight ahead of me, so I don't think I'll be too disappointed with it...

Also, the largest monitor I've owned is a 24" - I just measured the distance from where I sit to the monitor/TV I'm currently using and it is about 31in - I could probably move it a little further back, but do I need to worry about the screen being too close, considering it's such a big screen?

With the TN viewing angles, you MAY still notice the effect of this, it really is a subjective thing. What people often don't realise is that regardless of how straight ahead you are to the monitor, a 27" panel (which isn't small) will often suffer from gamma shift top to bottom, so even directly in front, you can see a shift in colour from the top to bottom of the screen. However, how much this bothers you is, as I say, entirely subjective, so it may not be an issue at all. This is one area which IPS wins out, but if you end up with a panel that suffers badly with bleed and/or glow, TN would be preferable even with some colour shift. This is the sad state of affairs we live with today, where IPS has almost gone backwards. It would be like BMW suddenly building cars with engines that exploded, so Ford would be the wiser purchase... but it wouldn't make them a superior car if those faults weren't existent on the BMW.

Very good analogy of the current state of the monitor industry there :D

I think I'm getting closer to making my decision on the Dell. Think I may wait a week or two and see if the price decreases. It looks like a few places are out of stock at the moment, so I'm crossing all my fingers that there is some sort of deal when they get stock next Monday!

Shameless self pimping but I've got an Asus Rog Swift PG278Q for sale on the MM at the mo (recently bought X34 so time to let it go).
Very good condition and decent price, take a look if interested...

They have the Dell on the B grade going for £329 which is amazing! And if you phone Dell they will grant you for full 2-3year warranty :).

To make things better there are reviews on the B grade and the reviews are convincing. Check it out and see if they still have some in stock
