Can't play a video!

I have an .avi here but it will not play! I have installed various codec packs aswell, what are the general guidelines for something like this?

The video just shows up as a grey box with no sound.

try using videolan client. All/most codec is built-in

Or use GSpot to see what codec the video requires.
