Hi all,
I'm fairly new to OSX and I'm having a bit of trouble printing to a printer shared on an XP machine.

I'm trying to print a photograph from Lightroom and when I click print, I get an authentication box (in which I enter the administrator credentials for the XP machine) and then I look in the print queue and the error is: Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)

Just a few details in case they help.... I'm using Mac OSX 10.5.2, the printer is a Canon Pixma ip4200 which is shared on an XP SP2 machine.

Can anyone help? :)

To me it appears that XP is not allowing you to print to the printer due to an authentication issue.

If you logon to your macbook as joe password bloggs. Add those user details to the XP machine. It should then allow you to authenticate with the XP machine and print.

I have had a similar problem when trying to add a network printer through CUPS, apparently there is a problem with CUPS since the last security update. I did this and it worked a treat:

1. System Preferences > Print & Fax
2. Click the + button to add a printer
3. If you have the Advanced button click it (if not the right-click on the top of the window and select Customise and then add the Advanced button)
4. Select Windows in the Type menu
5. The device should (?) remain as Another Device
6. After the smb:// type in "username:password@workgroup/server/printername" where each of those are replaced with your specific values (nb don't use the quotes)

You can find the workgroup, server and printer name in the same add printer dialogue. if you add a Windows printer (windows server that is) normally you just click through the layers: workgroup>server>printername.
