I,ve done that a couple of times.
once I ask if she had any nicknames, and then what her parents call her to which she replied 'nothing they just call me 'name'

Or you could say something like i'm of English heritage with my full name being xxx, whats urs.

I spent all of monday night calling a Danielle, Kate. Even sent her a text going along the lines of 'Hey Kate'. She still came and found me as well, I must be that good...either that or she's really desperate. Ah well, good looks and low self esteem, it's the perfect combination.

My name learning trick is pretty simple. Since I have got profound short term memory problems I have been given different strategies to make sure you remember peoples names. You first of all identify a feature about them so perhaps their eyes, what colour are they? You then identify a characteristic about them, are they always happy? Then you join them together to get a visual image which you place with the name, so lets say you get blue eyed happy Sally. You will remember that a lot easier, then when it comes to talking to them and recalling their name, you will see these features, and end up calling them Dave like I do to everyone I can't remember the name of!

I have a hard time remembering names, so generally I stand there and list them off until one clicks. Gets right on everyones nerves.

Just as long as you don't actually call them that, ie "Hi Blue Eyed, Happy Sally, how are you today?"
