I'm in the process of making the move to Vista..

So far so good, I partitioned my 74gb raptor and gave 25gb for vista... a week in and 25gb seems woefully inadequate (ie its full).

Fine I think, I'll go and hack through what I don't need on my 50gb xp partition and use the space for vista.

I freed up nearly 30gb on the xp partition, resized the partition using partition magic in xp leaving 30gb of unpartitioned space.

Back into vista.. disk management, extend partition.. no space available?? It's showing 30gb spare space but if I use extend partition I get nothing, no option to extend disk??

Just this

Back into xp.. partition magic can't do anything because it says the new partition is formatted with ntfs3.1?

Seemingly stuck now, even tried booting with the vista disk and still nothing..

Any ideas?

vista can't work with free space before a partition - it has to be after it. :p

and the layout you have there is a mess what with logical and extended drives. the real way to sort it would be to wipe the disk clean and start again with primary partitions only. but i'm guessing you don't want to intsall xp and vista again? :o

no, neither but if absolutely necessary I would install vista again because that shouldn't take too long.

If I go back into XP, delete the vista partition and create a 50gb partition blank and then install vista into it that should do it shouldn't it?

how was the disk setup before you installed vista. because if you delete the vista partition in xp, you might find xp won't boot. are you familiar with using fixboot and fixmbr in the xp recovery console? :)

I threw the towel in, deleted my vista partition and the spare partition, created a new partition and now reinstalling.

50gb and looking fine... only question is what happens when thats full? Does ghost work with vista?

Meh iv stumbled onto this thread in the search for the same answer :p

Iv never used ghost before...is it straight forward like Partition Magic?

give up mate... I just took the plunge straight away and reinstalled vista after repartitioning my xp drive (in XP).

ghost is very straightforward, or at least it was the last time I used it but its a different thing to partition magic.

I normally find a change of hard drive is a good excuse to clear out all the crap and start from scratch, I always keep a secondary drive so I can keep files/folders/favourites/desktop progs/game saves then prepare yourself by downloading the newest drivers for your mobo/gfx etc and store them on the secondary drive.

Whip out the old one, reinstall on the new one, install the presaved drivers, reinstate the desktop icons/shortcuts and presto. Clean install in about an hour.
