cant restore ipod

I tried to update to the latest software for my touch, and now it wont install or let me restore my ipod.
Any suggestions?

Each time i try windows comes up with the "new device connected" thingy.

edit: error is 1604

i got it sorted using my dad's laptop

but now it wont connect with my computer....
