Can't run monitor in 4K at 60 Hz with new NVidia drivers

Hi all,

I have a Windows 10 Pro, GTX 670 4GB and Philips BDM4065UC 4K monitor here and have been having this problem forever- I can run it in 4K at 60Hz but only with very old NVidia drivers (352.84). Anything newer than that would cause the monitor to only run at 29 Hz or 30HZ, the option for 60Hz disappears as soon as I install newer driver.

I have checked both with NVidia Control Panel and the integrated Windows way through right click +Display settings and indeed 60Hz is no longer available when new drivers get installed.

Now, I am absolutely sure my DP cable is capable in supporting 60Hz, like I said drivers 352.84 run wonderfully in 60Hz. I've also made sure that the monitor is set to DisplayPort 1.2 in the OSD menu and not DisplayPort 1.1.

Usually I wouldn't make a big deal out of this, in fact up until recently I was running my PC with the old 352.84 drivers. The problem is that 1-2 weeks ago my video drivers started getting automatic updates and no matter what I did to prevent these automatic updates they continued. I went through GeForce Experience and made sure that "Automatically download driver updates..." and "Notify me when a GeForce driver update is available" are both unchecked.
I also made sure Windows doesn't update the drivers itself via System properties/ Device Installation Settings/ No

Running my monitor at 30Hz results in obvious mouse cursor lag, super annoying. Not to mention that every time I get new video drivers installed my icons on screen get re-arranged.

Does anybody know why can't I run new NVidia drivers with my current setup at 60Hz? I realise my GTX 670 is rather old, could that be the problem? Could it be that NVidia no longer update their drivers so that they run at 60Hz with older hardware?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

What length is the cable? 4K@60Hz can be quite picky about cable though I've only ran into one case where a specific driver seemed to cause an issue like that.

Might be worth seeing if there a monitor definition file for it as occasionally that can fix resolution/refresh issues.

Thanks for the reply.
The cable is 2.8 meters. Also- what is a "monitor definition file"? Is that some file I have to download from the manufacturer's web-site?

Cheers.

Often a monitor manufacturer will provide a downloadable file that Windows can read to get extended information on the monitor's capabilities - it isn't normally needed as usually it can be read from the hardware but occasionally it can be useful.

Good chance the cable could be part of the problem - I've found that 4K@60Hz or 120+Hz on lower resolutions can be quite dependant on cable quality and length for reliable operation - anything over 1.8-2m can be a bit of a lottery with 4K@60Hz especially with the first generation of cards to support those resolutions.

I see. I will ask a friend of mine for a shorter DP cable then and see if that will fix my problem.
I doubt Phillips will provide such file though- I remember trying to download drivers for my monitor from their web-site and being left with a broken link...

Many thanks for the help, mate.

Much appreciated, Rroff.

I downloaded and then installed by right clicking on the .inf. Restarted the PC and still have the same issue as before- no 60Hz.
I am currently running the latest NVidia drivers and think will stick with them for now in spite of the mouse lag. Having the old drivers was perfect but sometimes after automatic update my system would completely crash and I would loose unsaved work.

P.S. I forgot to mention in the beginning- I have a dual monitor setup 2560x1440 (through DVI) and 3840x2160 (through DP). I am wondering if my ageing GTX 670 is incapable of outputting two 60Hz signals with these resolutions?
Anyway- I will borrow a shorter DP cable from a friend these days and will report back if that was the culprit.
Man, I hope I can wait until the new AMD Vega cards come out. I am so gonna upgrade my hardware, have been planning for a while anyway.

Many thanks for the help.

Worth trying with only one monitor connected - I know my laptop drops down possibly refresh rates with more than one external display connected though that has an older Fermi generation GPU.

Wow, I feel a bit silly now. With just the 4K monitor plugged into the graphics card I get both 4K and 60Hz. With no mouse lag. Shame on me- I usually consider myself a good troubleshooter :) . I should have started with unplugging the second monitor.
So I guess that settles it- it's my GTX 670 being incapable to drive 4K at 60Hz through the DP and 2560x1440 at 60Hz through the DVI ports simultaneously.
I will try to hook up my 2560x1440 monitor to the HDMI port on the GTX 670 then to see if I will get them to work as I have originally intended.

Many thanks for the help, Rroff and sorry about that time- waste.

All the best, mate.
