Grrrrr, this is seriously getting on my nerves!

Used to have Media Player Classic set as a default for MKVs and a few other types but, all of a sudden, it isn't and I can't set it as such.

When I do an Open With..., it's not on the list and browsing to the exe and selecting it also fails to add it to the list. I've tried editing the registry to make it the only available option for MKV files but still it doesn't work.

What on earth is going on?

i just use view>options>player>formats to set associations. never fails. :p

(you might need to right click your shortcut and run as administrator on vista/7)

you only use those if typing in a new file extension. it's unlikely you'll need to set anything that isn't already listed.

just use the tick boxes - or do what i do and just use the "video" button at the bottom.

This happens to me sometimes (Windows Vista and 7). Try right clicking an actual MKV (or AVI, or whatever) file, and selecting properties. The "Opens with..." should still be set to the other player in this case. Just change it to MPC in there, and it should go through fine. Give it a go. :)

EDIT: To be clear, yes I saw that you'd changed the "Open with" in the context menu. I'm talking about the second dialogue that allows this, inside Properties.

Still doesn't work - get the same window as when you right-click and select Open With, and yet again using browse to locate mplayerc.exe fails to add it to the list of available programs from which to choose.

^i already use mpc-hc64 so no need. :p

i just know that on older versions of mpc, you had to run as admin to get the file type associations to stick. :)
