I'm sure its a simple thing but not knowing a great deal about wireless networks its not that simple to me.

When I click share this connection I get the following error.

I have reserved an ip address for the printer is that what its having a huff about, do I need to remove the reservation?

On XP btw

TIA :)

Remove any fixed IP addresses from network connections on the PC you're trying to enable ICS on (whether you're actually using those connections or not), then try again.

On the laptop, wireless and lan connection are set to auto ip detect.

The desktop pc I have now set from manual to auto but still no joy.

On the router netgear dg834pn I have it set to wireless access control on and of course the laptop is allowed to connect.

What i'm trying to do is connect the xbox 360 through the laptop and then wirelessly to the router, some of the guides I've seen have said allow sharing for the wireless connection but I'm not getting very far with connecting the xbox because I keep getting the error.

as far as im aware ics hands out ip addresses and so does your routers dhcp. for this to work disable dhcp in the router and let ics handle the ip assignments .

Your existing LAN is configured to use the 192.168.0.x subnet. This is what ICS uses when you try to set it up, so there will be a conflict if you try to set up ICS when your other adaptor is already set up on that subnet.

instead of forking out on a xbox wireless adapter hes trying to use his laptop to give a wireless connection to the xbox, the alternative is a very long cat5.

In theory, as long as the xbox gets its ip from the laptop and not the router, all should be ok..

ok i'm getting totally confused now with the replies.

I logged into the router and disable dchp but that didn't seem to make much difference.

What I have done is change the ip address for the lan to 192.168.0.1 and the ip address for the wifi to 192.168.1.1 which I read on the mystery thread I can no longer find and this time I was able tot get the wireless sharing enabled. But changing them settings meant no internet which is what windows said might happen with the settings I put it.

On the Xbox however I have been able to get the ip confirmed which is a first but it failed at the dns, now to my knowledge my dns is 192.168.0.1

It can't be that difficult :p

Yer what Dogoid said, sorry thats what I should have put in the first place.

try the router having the ip 192.168.1.1 and the dhcp going from 1.1 also, and your xbox should get an ip within the range 192.168.0.1 to .255

You're doing it wrong.

Using the router plus ICS is introducing a double NAT and your X360 games probably won't like that. You're better off doing the following.

Running a cable to the 360.

Bridging your laptop's wifi card and Ethernet NIC.(not the same as ICS)

Or get an access point that supports point to point bridging or one of those powerline gizmos.

I've done bridging with a Virtual machines Tap32 interface and a wired NIC and it worked fine. DHCP passed across fine and web etc worked smoothly in the VM.
However this was on sturdy old XP with a linux VM, Vista's networking consturct might not be so friendly and willing to play ball.

Welcome to the world of console gaming :) the simplest hardware accessiories will cost a premium because they're given the chance to propriatorize it all. And this is Microsoft, the worst of them all when it comes to propriatory crap. Closely followed by sony :)

Your a genuis, tried what you said and it worked, updated to xbox nxe and now failing connection again lol whatever.

It semi installed the wifi way so plugged the xbox straight into router and it updated properly so seem this wireless way isn't very stable

I don't know what a NAT is and I'm not going to ask :p I was only trying the shared way because thats what some people have done.

I tried bridging but I then loose the net on the laptop which isnt much good, think thats why people say do it the shared way then the internet is fine.

Yer already looked into an ethernet over powerline before, they do look good though.

Not fair is it, some whiz kid needs to find a way to get the driver from the microripofsoft adaptor and bung it on a normal cheaper one.
