Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

Hi guys, not a thread for the sake of a thread, genuinely curious as to what you do to help yourself get off to sleep when you are struggling.

I had been trying to sleep since midnight, and because of a combination of things (tickling cough, a-lot of stuff on my mind, heat, noise from the fan, excessive sleep last night) I couldn't even get comfortable let alone get close to sleeping...

Tried turning off the fan and throwing the windows open instead, cough syrup for the throat, tried playing quiet music to give me something other than my thoughts to focus on, even tried drinking some spiced warm milk & rum to make myself drowsy, none of which worked...

So I will now sit here for the next 4 hours at my PC, until I leave for work at 8... Then I guess I'll sleep for an hour or two after work.

Well I work in an office, so the only "activity" I do throughout my day is getting up once or twice for a 15 minute walk to stretch my legs, and walking to and from the coffee machine/toilet occasionally. :p

So I just booked today off and slept from 7AM until 5PM.

Big mistake.

Now the same thing might happen again. :p

As a sufferer of acute eczema there are times when I've gone days without sleep due to the constant itching and feeling that my face is on fire. I've tried nearly everything, but in the end I just have to wait until I'm that tired I simply can't stay awake any more.

That can't be nice :(

I have taken to quietly playing a "sleep" playlist on Spotify through the Hi-Fi since creating this thread. Seems to work reasonably well. :)

Not necessarily. If your have a disturbed REM cycle, you can wake up REKT. At least I can and do any way.

I wish I was just tired at times! :p

Have you ever done what I have accidentally done before, which is, wake up for some reason, absolutely REKT as you described, gratefully nestled back into your pillow again, fallen into a deep sleep, woken up feeling really achey and worn out because you have slept for too long, then concluded that it would be best to keep resting, fallen back to sleep again, then woken up and realised it is 8PM and your sleep cycle is now utterly screwed again, and your muscles ache, and you have a headache? :p

Yes, yes many times. It seems to be the story of my life lately. Except change 8PM with 10PM and that's me.

I then usually stay up for 20-30 hours in a feel attempt to try and regulate myself, only for the same to happen again.

Rinse and repeat.

Glad its not just me. Though I would rather it were neither of us. :p

Thanks Freefaller. I'll give some of those things a go.

I don't help myself. I eat late in the evening, I go straight from sitting at the PC, to laying in bed, I check my phone a few times while I'm laying there, and when I am trying to sleep, my thoughts are disorganised and jumbled, I end up thinking about things and bounce between being excited or depressed, and anything in-between, and I constantly stress about the fact that I'm not sleeping, and that time is ticking.

I also don't excercise in the evening... The bedroom is also typically partially lit by my PC's internal lighting, but the constant hum of the PC being on is one of the things which does help me sleep. I can't sleep at all if it is silent, I am so used to hearing my PC in the background, that something seems wrong if it is off.

I have many things to fix. :p

If I drink anything with caffeine in it before getting into bed, I am not going to sleep... :p

My wife was in hospital this week and I ended up not being able to sleep.. I wlays end up watching a box set of some type.

I hope she is OK / gets well soon etc. <3

Watching videos of any kind just stimulates my brain and makes it even harder for me to sleep personally.

I tried some of the things Freefaller mentioned last night, it was working really well, I could feel my body going heavy and that I was drifting off, and then some **** messaged me on facebook which made my phone vibrate on my wooden bedside table and ruin everything.

My alarm doesn't wake me up unless my phone is also on vibrate, and my alarm clock is useless...

I could have killed them. :p

Just stop thinking about that car and those sleepless nights will stop. :D
There is probably some degree of truth to this... :D
Or just turn off mobile data on the phone overnight ... it's not as if he'd be checking it as he'd be asleep. Then turn it on again when you get up and by the time you've done your morning ablutions things have synced and can be read over breakfast ....
Good idea, thanks. Now I feel thick.
Also, what is "breakfast"? Is that that thing that is supposed to come between jumping out of bed and jumping in the car? :p

Breakfast is great! It's the best reason to get up in the morning!

Steak, steamed broccoli and sauteed potatoes with bacon bits this morning. Yum!

Your diet, although I'm sure it is very well balanced and healthy, really confuses me sometimes... :p

Steak, broccoli and potatoes for breakfast?
