Can't update XP

Just how retarded are Microsoft? As much as I hate being forced to use IE to update I fire it up and go to check if there's any updates for my XP! Well, for some reason it won't allow me to check due to it saying that certain service aren't running.

Well, they are running and here's a screenshot to prove it.

So, anyone got any ideas as how to update my XP?

I think I had this problem when I put the related services onto manual and turned them off on boot up. This should have meant that Windows would only run these services when I ran Windows Update. However it didn't work.

Reason was that although Automatic Updates and BITS were running and were set to Manual, Windows required Automatic Updates to be set to automatic. I couldn't understand why this was. If its running from manual, its running. Get on with it!

So I put Automatic Updates to automatic, kept BITS on manual and it worked.

Thanks, I used the plug-in for Firefox and worked a treat. Now, if I can only figure out why I can't access the net via the msdos window I'll be set. Bloody thing won't allow me to ping anything.
